Leaking Or Running toilet?
We’ve all had that experience – you flush the toilet, wash your hands, and as you go to leave the bathroom you realise that the toilet water hasn’t stopped running after its normal flush cycle.
Generally, when that happens, most of us try flushing again or jiggling the flush valve a little – neither of which tend to resolve the issue. However, there are a few things you can do to stop the water from constantly running in your toilet. Once you figure out what’s causing the problem, it becomes fairly straightforward to fix.
The float in the back of your toilet is too high
The float is what determines how much water should be in the tank above your toilet seat. When the float is higher than it should be, excess water will consistently overflow from the tank into the bowl, and that’s why you’ll hear running water from your toilet in the middle of the night when you’re trying to sleep.
To fix this, you need to adjust the height of the float, which will in turn adjust the water level to where it should be. Try either loosening or tightening the screw on your float arm until it lowers. If your toilet has a column float, you can simply loosen the screw or the clip that’s fixing it to the fill valve, lower it and then tighten it again.
Your toilet’s flapper needs replacing
For those who don’t know, a flapper is what provides a seal for the flush valve, and thus controls the amount of water that’s released into the toilet bowl. Flappers are not indestructible, and eventually, they stop sealing the flush valve effectively, at which point you simply need to replace it.
Flappers are available in any decent hardware store, and to switch them you simply detach the chain and pins from the old flapper and re-attach them to the new one. Be sure to turn the tap off at the wall and flush the toilet to drain the water before replacing your flapper.
Your toilet’s refill tube is too long
When a toilet’s refill tube is too long or isn’t positioned properly in the overflow tube, it will constantly pump water into your toilet. To stop your toilet water running after you flush it, simply pull the refill tube out of the overflow, hold it slightly above the opening to the overflow with one hand, and use your other hand to trim the tube off at that point. Clip it to the side of the overflow tube, and it should stay in place… no more constantly running toilet water!
